Juliet And Jamie Gutch

The different elements of each sculpture are in perfect balance, they glance past each other, always intending to, but never touching.

Juliet and Jamie Gutch each developed their artistic style and direction independently before meeting in 2001. From that time they have increasingly been working in partnership on commissions and exhibitions.

Soon after graduating from Cambridge University in French and Italian, Jamie Gutch established a studio in Stepney, London. For eight years he worked on large scale commissions for companies such as BP, the West Middlesex and Milton Keynes Hospital as well as for private clients. In 2004 Jamie decided to train to teach whilst also collaborating with Juliet on arts projects. He is now an Assistant Head (Inclusion) at a large comprehensive school in West Yorkshire.

Juliet Gutch studied Russian and English at Birmingham University and various pieces of her creative writing were published in poetry books and The Critical Quarterly. Whilst at university she won the Seton-Watson Bursary to spend time in Russia and subsequently made a programme for Russian Service BBC about her research. Soon after that she spent several years in Italy where she developed her interest in mobiles and first exhibited her works alongside her poetry.

Recent large-scale commissions which Juliet and Jamie have worked on include three permanent mobiles for the interior of the John Lewis store, Westfield Stratford City, East London, three mobiles for St. Georges Hospital London and an installation for the reception atrium of the Northumberland Specialist Emergency Care Hospital. Whilst they work in a variety of wood for their pieces, for large-scale commissions they work with a metal fabricator and use aluminium and stainless steel.

Juliet and Jamie also carry out mobile making workshops alongside their exhibitions and commissions. They are currently working with Bradford Refugee Action to deliver a number of workshops entitled ‘Playing with balance’ in and around Bradford. They live in Ilkley, Yorkshire.
