Valèria Nascimento

Born in Goiânia, Brazil in 1962, Valèria grew up surrounded by exuberant Brazilian landscapes which inspired her from an early age. Originally an architect, while living in Rio she was introduced to clay and became fascinated by its multiple possibilities for expression and development of ideas.

Valèria's inspiration is drawn mostly from the natural world, though her work carries references to both architectural and botanical forms. Nature is full of reoccurring patterns and rhythms; spirals, waves, repeating petals and leaves. As in nature, each piece of Valèria's work, though seemingly a duplicate, is unique. Porcelain has the smoothness and the malleability that she needs to create new shapes, manipulating them to appear in some cases defiantly weightless.

For as long as Valèria can remember, she has always been fascinated with repetitive sequencing in her work, combining separate elements to form a cohesive group. Over the years, her work has come to focus on large commission-based installations.

Valèria's work is a celebration of nature itself. She aims to create works that inspire, connect and touch emotionally, taking the viewer on a journey through different ethereal, botanical and peaceful landscapes.
