Patrick Caulfield's work has long been associated with Pop Art in Britain. However, whilst many pop works are complex and intricate compositions, Caulfield has always produced bold, simple designs with uniform expanses of colour. Since the early 1980's the most prominent colour has been dark red.
Caulfield's works play around with representations of reality, everyday scenes and objects on the canvas depicted on different ways, frequently mixing styles in one work. Some parts are painted with a photographic precision, in other parts of the work representation is stylistic commonly using thick black lines.
Caulfield's
approach to representation lends itself xceedingly well to printmaking.
