  Patrick Caulfield

"Caulfield is a supreme pictorial designer, playing with verticals and diagonals, with reality and its reflections in fruitful ambiguity. The geometry may on occasion be radical but it is never really abstract. His works transcend social commentary (though sharply accurate in their details) to achieve a surprising classicism. A masterly touch rendered intense through being stylised, yet still peculiarly contemplative."

"Caulfield is our most seductive painter of the urban.

He has made it OK to paint the grubby world of cafes, bars and dull domestic interiors. The sad, sagging reality of textured Vynura paint, the garish plastic flowers, naff Greek restaurants with polypropylene chairs all form a vocabulary that is so close to home that we don't know whether to smurk or cringe. These spaces may not exist in real life, but we've all been there.

Social realism without the emotion is how Caulfield describes it."
