"'...behind-the-scene shots of stars are rare these days...the most you're likely to get are publicity shots airbrushed to generic perfection, and contrived on-set images, all scrupulously monitered by the publicists, which, as director Alan Parker said, is 'the kiss of death to reportage photography'. Three years ago, however, Leica in hand, Williams managed to work his way on to the set of 'Elizabeth' for a 10-week project on the explosion of creativity in the British film industry, now worth £575 million. Forty-five films later, he's going public... A final selection of 200 images was put together for his book 'On Set'. Taking candid, spontaneous shots on location, capturing what Cartier-Bresson referred to as 'the decisive moment', while keeping out of everyone's way is no mean feat.... 'The set is always lit for the film's shot, which is sacrosanct,' explains Alan Parker in the introduction to On Set, 'but Greg has managed to compose artful images from the available light and sometimes with the almost complete lack of it.' William's passion for the cinema and life on location comes through in his pictures, though he's drawn to that moment when the illusion is shattered and the surreal takes over.' The Observer
